How to leave a bad date politely
Decide, then keep it short: thank them, give one brief reason, offer to pay your share, and go. “I’ve had a nice time, but I’m going to head home” is enough, and you don’t owe more.
If saying it out loud feels impossible, let a phone call do the work. Pick a roommate as the caller, trigger the call while you check your phone, answer with “You’re locked out? I’m on my way,” and leave.
First: is it time to leave?
Boring is fine to sit through for one drink. These are good reasons to end the date now:
- You already know you won’t see them again, and there’s nothing left to say.
- They’re rude to you or to the staff.
- They keep pushing you to drink more, or to go somewhere else.
- They ignore a “no” about anything, however small.
The last two aren’t just awkward. If you feel uneasy, skip the polite script and see If you feel unsafe below.
Option 1: Just say it
An honest, short exit is the cleanest. You don’t need a reason, but having one sentence ready makes it easier to say:
“I’ve had a nice time, but I’m going to call it a night.”
“I don’t think we’re a match, but thanks for meeting up.”
“I’ve got an early start tomorrow, so I’m going to head home.”
Stand up as you say it. Standing turns a suggestion into a decision.
Option 2: Set an end time before you start
Mention a plan at the start: “I can do one drink, I’m meeting friends at nine.” If the date goes well, you can “text your friends” and stay. If it doesn’t, the exit is already agreed.
Option 3: Let a phone call do it
When saying it out loud feels impossible, a call gives you an exit nobody argues with. The trick is choosing a caller and a reason that are completely ordinary.
| Caller | What you say | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Roommate | “Wait, you’re locked out? Okay, I’m on my way.” | Urgent, boring, nobody asks about it later |
| Sibling | “Is everything okay? … Okay, I’ll come now.” | Family calls are taken without explanation |
| Friend | “Oh no. Where are you? I’ll be there in twenty.” | Sounds like a friend needs you tonight |
| Dog sitter | “He did what? Okay, I’ll head home.” | Pets are the most sympathetic excuse there is |
| Boss | “Now? Okay, I can get on a call in fifteen.” | Works on weeknights; less believable on a Saturday |
Step by step with needacall
- Before the date, open needacall and set the caller to your roommate. Choose ring, or the vibration sound if the place is quiet.
- When you check your phone (everyone does), open the app. It looks like a chat app.
- Triple-tap anywhere. The call appears. Let it ring twice before you react.
- Answer: “Hey… wait, you’re locked out? Okay, I’ll come now.”
- Apologize, pay, go: “I’m so sorry, I have to go. Let me get my half.”
Not set up yet? On iPhone, it takes two minutes: how to get a fake call on iPhone without an app.
What not to do
- Don’t invent a medical emergency. “My dad is in the hospital” gets a worried text tomorrow, and now you have to keep the story going.
- Don’t over-apologize. One “I’m sorry” is polite. Five sounds like you’re lying.
- Don’t promise a next time you don’t mean. “Thanks for tonight” is enough.
- Don’t come back to finish your drink after the call.
If you feel unsafe
A fake call is for dates that are dull, not dates that feel wrong. If you feel unsafe:
- Go to the bar or counter and tell staff. Many bars in the UK and elsewhere run “Ask for Angela”: ask for Angela and staff will help you leave discreetly.
- Call a friend for real, and stay on the line until you’re in a cab.
- Arrange your own ride home, and don’t share where you live.
- In danger, call 911 (US), 112 (EU) or 999 (UK).
Questions
Is it rude to leave a date early?
Not if you’re polite about it. Staying for hours when you’re not interested isn’t kinder; it just wastes both your evenings. Thank them, keep it brief, and pay your share.
How long should I stay on a bad first date?
There’s no minimum. Many people use a single drink or coffee as the natural length of a first date, which gives both of you an easy end point.
Should I tell the truth instead of using an excuse?
If you feel safe and comfortable, a short honest line is the cleanest exit. Excuses are for when honesty would turn into a long conversation you don’t want to have.
Should I pay if I leave early?
Offer to pay for what you ordered. It ends things on a fair note and leaves no reason to keep talking.
What if they offer to walk me home or drive me?
Say “Thanks, I’m all set,” and arrange your own ride. You don’t need to explain.
Real danger = real call. needacall is for awkward moments, not emergencies. If you’re in danger, call 911 (US), 112 (EU) or 999 (UK).
