How to get away from a pushy salesperson

Short answer

You don’t owe a salesperson a reason. Say “No, thank you,” keep moving, and repeat the same words if they push. Reasons give them something to argue with.

If you can’t get a word in, a phone call works: answer with “Yes, I’m free now, give me a second,” and walk away while you talk.

The lines that work

“No, thank you.”

“I’m not interested, but thanks for your time.”

“I’ve already decided. Have a good day.”

Say it while you move. Don’t stop walking, don’t take the brochure, and if they continue, repeat exactly the same line. The repetition is the point.

By situation

WhereWhat to sayWhat to do
Mall kiosk or store“No thanks, just looking.”Keep walking; don’t take the sample
Gym membership desk“I’m not signing today.”Leave the paperwork, ask for the price in writing if you want it
Timeshare tour“I’m not buying. Please arrange my ride back.”Repeat it; ask for any promised gift
Front door“Not interested, thanks.”Close the door
Phone call“Please take me off your list.”Hang up

When a call is the easier exit

Some salespeople talk without pausing. A phone call creates the pause for you, and stepping away to take a call is never rude.

CallerWhat you say
Boss“Yes, I’m free now. Give me a second.”
Partner“I’m outside, where are you parked?”
Friend“I’m here, coming to find you now.”

Don’t do this

Questions

Is it rude to walk away from a salesperson?

No. Say “No, thank you” and leave. Walking away without a reason is normal, and a good salesperson expects it.

Why shouldn’t I give a reason?

Every reason is something to overcome: “too expensive” gets a discount, “need to think” gets a deadline. “No, thank you” has no answer.

How do I leave a timeshare presentation?

Say “I’m not buying today, please arrange my ride back,” and repeat it. If you were promised a gift for attending, ask for it at that point.

What about door-to-door salespeople?

You don’t have to open the door. If you do, “Not interested, thanks,” and close it.

Real danger = real call. needacall is for awkward moments, not emergencies. If you’re in danger, call 911 (US), 112 (EU) or 999 (UK).
