When a fake call isn’t enough: what to do if you feel unsafe

Short answer

If you feel unsafe, don’t rely on a fake call. Get to where there are people, tell staff, and call emergency services for real: 911 in the US, 112 in the EU, 999 in the UK, 110 in China.

Both iPhone and Android have an Emergency SOS shortcut that calls for help with a few button presses. Set it up and learn it before you need it.

Where needacall fits

needacall is built for awkward moments: a dull date, a meeting that won’t end, a salesperson who won’t stop. It doesn’t place real calls, can’t contact anyone, and isn’t a safety device. When something feels wrong, use the steps above.

Questions

Can a fake call keep me safe?

No. It can help you leave an awkward conversation. If someone is threatening you, following you, or won’t let you leave, call emergency services for real.

How do I call for help without talking?

In many US areas you can text 911. In the UK, if you call 999 and can’t speak, cough or make a noise; if prompted, press 55 on a mobile to show it’s a real emergency.

What is Ask for Angela?

A scheme run by many bars and venues, especially in the UK: asking staff for “Angela” tells them you need help leaving discreetly.

How do I use Emergency SOS on iPhone?

Press and hold the side button and either volume button until the sliders appear, then drag Emergency Call, or keep holding to call automatically.

How do I use Emergency SOS on Android?

On most recent Android phones, press the power button quickly five times or more. Check Settings → Safety & emergency to turn it on and see your phone’s exact steps.

Real danger = real call. needacall is for awkward moments, not emergencies. If you’re in danger, call 911 (US), 112 (EU) or 999 (UK).
